New DJI Phantom vision unwrapped

New DJI Phantom vision unwrapped to reveal many design changes and additional features that enables greater interaction between the pilot and this new computerized flying machine. The big step up was achieved by connecting a smart phone to a smart flying machine with a new DJI software application.  It increases the control of the camera on board and also more control of the flying machine. Here are some of the new features:

  • WI-FI CONNECTION.
    Monitor real-time flight data along with live camera view up to a distance of 300m with a Wi-Fi wireless connection to your mobile device.
  • Improved battery, peak performance 5200mAh Lithium Polymer battery enables up to 25 minutes of flying time.
  • Range Extender, operating frequency (2412-2462MHz). Communication Distance 300 meters （open area）.     Transmitter Power <=17dBm.  Power Consumption 1.5 W.
  • New camera included with the kit, it is a 14 Megapixel camera, it supports both RAW and JPEG format.  Camera has a multi-capture, continuous capture and timed capture support. Also video streaming has been made possible, with HD recording at (1080/p30 or 1080/60i).
  • Album synchronization.  Synchronize the camera’s SD card content through Wi-Fi directly with your phone’s photo album eliminating the requirement to connect to a PC.

The items listed are the most obvious changes to the new design, you will need to provide your own smart phone to be able to view the flight from air. The software applications for the DJI Phantom vision are for both iOS and Android.  Here are some recommendations.  DJI Vision application system requirement for  Mobile Device:
iOS version 6.0 or above/ Android system version 4.0 or above.  Recommended: iPhone4s, iPhone5, iPhone5s, iPod Touch4, iPod Touch5.
Available but not recommended:iPAD3, iPAD4, iPAD mini.
Samsung Galaxy S3, S4, Note2, Note3or phones of similar configuration.

This new DJI Vision model kit is also different to the previous kit, because the new kit comes with a camera, the previous DJI Phantom did not. There is the apparent issue brought up in the previous models testing, and the improved video streaming quality by using the custom made Zenmuse camera stabilizer.  So there is the obvious big step forward in the new software application combining a smart phone to the smart flying machine, the other unavoidable issue is to see how smooth the video quality is with the stock standard DJI Phantom Vision kit.  The previous model before the Vision is now available under US $500.00. Which makes the DJI drone kit with the Zenmuse stabilizer and the Go-Pro camera around the same price as the new Phantom Vision kit in 2013.  So the question remains how does the quality compare with the two set ups?

  1. Go-Pro black series camera.
  2. DJI Phantom Vision 14 MB camera.
  3. Standard DJI camera mount.
  4. Zenmuse custom made Go-Pro camera stabilizer

The DJI Phantom quad-copter is an entry level UAV, it weighs at 1160 grams.  Ideally the camera should be light, the Go-Pro camera is just that, weighing some 72grams. Obviously the quality of the pictures can not be improved by mounting an SLR camera to the DJI Phantom Vision, because it would be like a sentence, tying a chain with a cannon ball to a leg of a live person. So what are the options, there are not many options when it comes to the choice of camera for the DJI Phantom Vision, Professionally speaking.

  • Go-Pro camera.
  • DJI Phantom Vision 14  Megapixel camera.

But the thing to remember we are talking about entry level of an aerial photography with many creative possibilities opening up with the additional third dimensional view of photographing.  So what really matters is the ability to think outside the box, to be creative, to create images and video that is new and exciting.  Forget the attitude that you must have the best camera to be able to take the best pictures, because that is false.  Even with the best camera equipment, unless you understand photography and the conditions that enable great photography it is very likely that the pictures will be a great as one would expect.  So the right approach can be to be creative, be flexible to make the most with what you have, and build upon what you already know, and continue to learn how to make the videos and images make more of a positive impression of the natural environment that we so enjoy. New DJI Phantom Vision, is cutting a new groove with the 2 Generation, light weight model.

New DJI Phantom Vision is about a new product coming out soon in 2013 by DJI.
The New DJI Phantom Vision is a second generation DJI Phantom UAV. Many new changes have been planned for the New Phantom Vision, some of them are listed here:

  • 2nd Generation, New body shape
  • Bigger and stronger battery capacity
  • Camera comes standard with the platform

The New DJI Phantom Vision is generating excitement amongst hobbyist and Aerial photographers.

The new feature with improved flight time and reduced set up cost is bound to attract buyers to try it out and explore the possibilities of aerial video photography.  Straight from the box with a camera and mount, control panel and access to a visual flight display by using a phone. Currently there is an application only for an iPhone, but according to the DJI SEO Colin Guinn, the Android application should be available some time in future.

New DJI Phantom Vision is going to be the rave in the near future for some time, it may not be the “bees pants” for the experienced “Professionals”, but the distance between them and the hobbyist is getting narrower by the week. Who would have imagined only thirteen years ago, that a light weight aerial platform would be available for the public, with a camera and live video stream option, with a price tag well under a grand.  The New DJI Phantom Vision price is still uncertain and unknown, but we do know that the complete Vision kit price is going to be less than the previous model with the various accesories.

What unmanned air vehicle? A great question to ask.

The most obvious answer to the question; what unmanned vehicle is that there is no pilot on board guiding the vehicle through the air. The vehicle is being guided remotely from the ground. For more information read my article on the Ezine Articles with the same title.

The modern innovative digital technology has enabled cameras both with the still image and video to be made small and light, this has caught on with hobbyist and action sports enthusiasts to attach a video camera to the vehicle, whether it is a bike helmet, a skateboard, snowboard, surfboard, motor cross bike helmet or a remotely radio controlled vehicle like a U.A.V.

For this purpose the UAV or a camera drone is for the purpose of purely fun and recreation, for learning and mastering new hobby.  Or it can be for the purpose of capturing still images or a video stream of the flight path around a scenic environment, which can be used for promoting and marketing a holiday destination, e-g- a hotel or a holiday resort.  There are many applications once the quality images and video footage has been created.
There are many types of UAV, some of the military ones are real plane size that can weight as much as 8 ton without any ammunition on board, but that is not what this web site is about.
The camera UAV and drones also come in various sizes and weight, a reasonable light weight drone is the DJI Phantom, with a light weight Go-Pro camera which only weights 73 grams.  It can be air borne for minimum of 10 minutes. Here is more information on this product.

Is UAV photography the new way to fly and to view the world at a fraction of the cost.

UAV photography is becoming more popular as new affordable quality products become available, and as the new industry gets more momentum by the opening up of new technology and by the demands of the users.

There are many fine products available for UAV photography, just like in any other new innovative industry, some are made and designed for the competitive hard core professionals, aerial photography, festivals and events, advertising purposes and for marketing destinations and tourism at a less of over all cost than booking, hiring a helicopter and crew for a scenic photo shoot.

There are a lot less helicopters and small planes than there are UAV drones, and the cost of maintenance is a lot less in this time and age of willful carbon omission reductions.  If only the experience of remote flying a UAV with a live video screening, and UAV photography, could take away the need of so many millions of people to fly abroad several times per year.  If not a UAV photography drone, then maybe a solar powered glider could do the trick and save many barrels of crude oil per person each year.

UAV Photography is here to stay, the new innovations and technology has made it  possible to do that which was beyond the reach of the common hobbyist only 10 years ago.

Digital cameras only flourished globally around and after year 2000, and then became affordable items just like the mobile phones did around 1990.  I got my first mobile phone around that time, and the digital camera came some 10 years later.

Watch this space, i will be adding some important brand names to watch out for, there are many brands that have products ready on the market.  Some of them are inexpensive toys, available on Amazon, others are more expensive and only available from their brand representatives.

Here is an action camera from Amazon, it is called the GoPro 3. Specially designed for outdoors and action shots.  There is a new multi-axis camera gimbal bracket coming out by DJI in May 2013, it is a smart device connected with software to the drone flight control, keeping camera direction and level regardless whether the drone is pitching, turning, ascending or descending.  There are 2 way axis gimbals and also 3 way axis gimbals, that enable panning of the camera remotely. It improves the quality of the camera video footage by making it more steady and level even if the drone is not flying perfectly level.  The GoPro camera range is a multipurpose camera, which can be mounted for filming many types of sports; cycling, skateboarding, surfing, motor sports and more.

These are as a sample to see what price range one wants to aim at, or maybe to start with a product at the lower end and to learn the skills needed first to be able to fly and control the UAV within a controlled risk and the environment. Even at the above price range the UAV drone are loaded with very bright technologies and a GPS systems that detect satellites for navigation from the sky above.

The Phantom’s battery is said to last under 15 minutes of flying, you would want to have a second one for back up especially if flying the UAV drone away from home base. The stock DJI Phantom package only includes a single 2,200mAh battery and a charger.  Flying with a camera mounted does add weight to a UAV drone, therefore using up more power during the flight. The Hero 3 black edition weighs 2.6 ounces.
